So today in the gym, I see a bunch of hot chicks doing a killer crossfit style circuit workout. To the average joe, it all looks real good. But as I noticed what they were doing, I realized that they weren’t as high speed as they appeared. Their form was mediocre and some of the stuff they said they were doing wasn’t even the right exercise. So if your gonna do high speed crossfit style stuff, which is fine when done properly, you need to know how to do the exercises and what they are to begin with. Also you need to have a task and purpose for the workout. Crossfit style workouts are generally known for general physical preparedness.

Doing Olympic / powerlifting exercises with just a bare bar or with pink dumbbells for super high reps / timed sets, makes me scratch my head. There are elements of crossfit and gym jones style training that I incorporate into my program. But I use them for what they are - general physical preparedness conditioning drills. They are great for metabolic resistance training and fat burning as well. But they don’t make you really strong. So when I have people do Olympic / powerlifting exercises, I have them do these drills the way they were meant to be done – with massive weight and for low reps culminating in the one rep max. But to each their own with that stuff.

Another problem I have with the mainstream highspeeders is that many just print off the workout of the day and knock it out. While it’s ok if done properly, many don’t have a plan nor do they know how to do all of the exercises properly with correct form. Example: I watched the highspeeders say they were gonna do kettlebell snatches and then they had their buddy show them how to do it because they didn’t know how. Their buddy showed them a mediocre kettlebell jerk and called it a snatch. Credibility was then a big zero.

Bottom Line – Regardless of which style of training you utilize to become a super ninja jedi, know what the hell your doing and do it right.

Multi-Joint, Compound Exercises For Total Body Strength & Conditioning

I have had alot of people ask me why we do so many total body, multi-joint compound movements and often avoid doing isolated body part movements. There are many reasons why. The big reason I use total body multi-joint training is to get the most bang for your buck, in terms of the amount of results for time invested. The squat to overhead press is a classic example of a total body, multi-joint movement. This exercise uses most of the major muscle groups to execute the movement. In addition to the prime movers, a zillion smaller, secondary stabilizer muscles are used to assist the prime movers and to stabilize the core. So with one exercise, you utilize the max number of muscles to execute the drill.

So if I wanted to work each muscle group separately, my workout would take ten times longer and I would have to do a whole bunch of different exercises for x number of sets and reps. Simply put: efficiency. Secondly, another big reason to use multi-joint total body movements is to cause the greatest metabolic response with the least volume of work. Ever heard of working smarter, not harder? You want to invoke the greatest long term calorie burn in the least amount of time. The metabolic response to an exercise like the squat to overhead press is huge compared to say, a leg extension or leg curl.

So in the strength & conditioning and fat loss arenas, total body, multi-joint, compound movements are the most effective way to go, in my experience. Do isolation exercises have their place?- of course they do. It all depends on what your goals are. I see people, who say they want to tone up and get lean, doing long, slow, steady state cardio and a bunch of isolation exercises with light weights every day. Does this work? For some people it works better than others but usually for only brief periods of time. Then you plateau and the frustration begins.

So based upon your goals, find the most effective method and plan that will get you to your goal sooner rather than later. Don't waste your time doing mediocre stuff that will drain your time, wallet and motivation. Do your research, make a plan and then hit it hard and fast with a vengeance. Your odds of success will be greatly improved.

Partial Reps For Max Strength

I use partial rep training to help clients gain max strength in a short amount of time. Partial rep training does not replace full range of motion training but is used in conjunction with it. There are many reasons why it works. There are many different trains of thought about partial rep training, both pro and con. My experience has been very positive with partial rep training. It has always worked for me and my clients.

The simple version of why it works is as follows: When you stress your body properly with heavy loads, you force your body to respond to the stressor. If you are eating right, hydrating, getting enough recovery and sleep with this type of controlled stress, your body gets lean, strong and fast with a quickness. I have used partial reps with heavy one rep / low rep training for max gains in strength combined with medium to high rep training for conditioning / endurance. The combo is very effective when all of the variables are optimal (food, sleep, recovery, hydration etc…) and it produces significant results in record time.

I have had numerous clients increase their main lifts by 40-60lbs (squat,bench, military press,row,deadlift)in 60 days or less using these methods. The bottom line is that I use it because it works and it will work for you if you are interested.
