Why I don't like shows like the Biggest Loser and Extreme Weight Loss

I was watching TV the other night and I came across extreme weight loss. I haven't watched this show as much as the biggest loser but I quickly became disappointed in it as much as my old favorite.

Most people misunderstand why I don't approve of these shows. These shows are inspiring, motivating, encouraging and give people hope. So why wouldn't I like that?

That part isn't the problem. I do think anything that motivates and inspires you to change your life for the better is a good thing.

The issues with these shows are that they are unrealistic, unsafe and promote fitness and nutrition methods that are outdated and frankly unhealthy.

These shows focus on the competition of weightloss for a prize. Healthy things like recovery, programming, body composition, supportive nutrition, FAT LOSS, and lean body mass are not only absent but have nothing to do with the shows.

Crazy, super long, cardio based workouts with low calorie diet concepts are used throughout these shows with the sole focus of making the scale go down big.

Nobody in the professional fitness world does these things anymore because they are unhealthy and very outdated.

Even all of the popular fad fitness programs like crossfit, insanity and P90X use better training and nutrition concepts than these shows.

So what happens is that average joe and jane watches these shows and sees all of these people losing 30lbs in a week and bamm - they are off to globo gym to hit that treadmill and they embark on some haphazard diet routine.

They lose lean body mass and bone density, retain bodyfat and make that scale go down -woo hoo the scale is down!

Then after a few weeks, they plateau and eventually give up and usually gain all they lost back and many times much more. A circle of despair that never ends. When it could all be avoided if the right stuff was shown and taught.

Unhealthy and ineffective methods are perpetuated through media for the sole purpose of making money. That is why I don't like these shows.

I study and teach clients how to do it right everyday. It is frustrating to see the exact opposite of what I teach being promoted as the way to go on these hyped up weightloss shows.

Learn how to do it right. Burn fat and build muscle through safe, productive and challenging exercise and healthy, supportive nutrition. If you need help learning how to do it, I'm here to help.

Kettlebells: Back before they were cool

Kettlebells are amazing tools. I completed two kettlebell training courses in 1997. One with the Ranger Training Brigade and one with Troy university. The instructor was a special forces soldier from Estonia. He wasn't some famous guy. Hell, I don't even remember his name. Nobody even knew what kettlebells were back then. There were no certifications, no diplomas, no titles, no rivalries. Just technical instruction and hard training. I have been using and teaching kettlebells ever since.

Just another fitness tool that has been part of my program before it became cool.

Wildlife Chronicles Of Salem, AL: Enter Jonathan, The Snake!

Anyone know what kind of snake this is? I'm thinking it is a gray rat snake but I'm not sure.

So while conducting post tornado yard cleanup this morning, I was surprised to see a big ass snake near my front door. I watched him for a few minutes, took some pics of him and named him Jonathan. I told him that while it was nice of him to visit, it was best if he moved along.

I got a big stick and moved within a few yards of him and told him again, to step off - or in this case, slither off. He coiled up a bit in protest. I told him that I was not in the mood for snake games and that if he didn't depart the area, we were going to have issues, resulting in his untimely death. He chose to move to the bushes near my door. I used my stick to tap the bushes and he slithered away, around the corner.

He was about 1 meter long and had a light gray body with dark splotches as you can see in the photo. His tail was tapered and had no rattle. He doesn't look like a threat although I don't need him hanging around my front door. Hopefully he will move on and I won't have to kill him.

Geez, last was a possum, now a snake, what will I find next outside my front door?

MRI BLACK POWDER ULTRA PRE-WORKOUT REVIEW

So with any supplement, the first thing to keep in mind is that each supplement has different effects / results for each person. This month's review is of MRI Black Powder Ultra. I don't sell this product or get anything for endorsing this.

I tried a sample of the original version of black powder and I really liked it. So naturally I couldn't find it anywhere. I bought the black powder ultra and gave it a try for a week of workouts. I liked the original formula better. But having said that, the ultra worked well for me.

There were no jitters or any negative side effects that I noticed. I did have increased focus, motivation, energy, strength and endurance. I like it.

I got the watermelon flavor which isn't bad. I've tasted some horrible pre-workout powders before so this was much better. Did it perform any miracles? -No. But it did allow me to get in some really good workouts and I was pleased with it.

Trying out black powder ultra this month for my pre-workout supplement review. #nutrition

Bodybuilding.com reviews rated it at 7.1 out of 10. You can see by their reviews that some people hate it and some people love it. It works differently for each person like I mentioned earlier.

It has worked well for me and I will continue to use it. One thing to remember is that a good rule to use is to rotate supplements frequently so you don't get used to the supplement or adapt to it like a plateau. I generally use a variety of proven supplements and take different ones at different times. If I use one brand too long, the effects / benefits diminish over time. I will add it to my pre-workout rotation mix.

And there is the "OMG it causes cancer" bit on the label. It's pretty much a required label for certain products in CA. I'm not too concerned with this. You can read about it here.
